About the Concentration in Health Economics and Policy

The Health Economics and Policy concentration prepares doctoral students to tackle the most pressing challenges in health and health care through rigorous research.  This program combines traditional economic training with applied health policy and health services research, preparing the next generation of health economists. 

Program Highlights

  • Interdisciplinary Training: Students gain a strong foundation in microeconomic theory, econometrics, and health policy.
  • Coursework Across Disciplines: Includes PhD-level courses in economics through the Department of Economics in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences as well as courses in public health at the Bloomberg School.
  • Research with Impact: We emphasize policy-relevant research, equipping students to address challenges related to health care costs, access, and outcomes.

Faculty Mentorship & Research Areas

Each doctoral student is paired with a faculty adviser from the Health Economics concentration who shares their research interests.  Faculty are engaged in diverse areas such as:

  • Health insurance.
  • Economic impact of health disparities.
  • Economics of aging.
  • Market dynamics and health care pricing.
  • Pharmaceutical economics.
  • Payment systems and access to care.
  • Economics of mental health and substance use policy.
  • Economic evaluation.

Students also collaborate with faculty across departments, including:

  • International Health.
  • Population, Family and Reproductive Health.
  • Biostatistics.
  • School of Medicine.
  • School of Nursing.

Additionally, students frequently engage with university-wide initiatives such as the Hopkins Business of Health Initiative, gaining exposure to interdisciplinary research and real world applications.

The program prepares students for successful research careers as health economists.
