About the MHS in Population, Family and Reproductive Health Program

The MHS is designed for students who are interested in advancing their knowledge in PFRH areas of interest and strengthening their research and analytic skills. Students can complete the program in-person in 9 months, or on an online, part-time basis in 1 to 3 years. The program is especially well-suited to students who desire skills to conduct research and evaluation and enhance their potential for career advancement. The program equips students with a fundamental understanding of statistics and research and evaluation methods; expertise in an area of interest in the department; and ability to apply the life course framework to public health topics of interest. The curriculum is intended for students with at least one year of full-time public health or research experience to inform their area of research inquiry prior to entry into the program.

Apply by March 1 for an August start (in-person/full-time and online/part-time options)

Research Methods Coursework

Students select two research methods courses to strengthen their research and evaluation skills.

Master's Essay & Presentation

Students complete this culminating project in the last two terms of the program. Students select their essay topic and identify a faculty essay advisor.

Prior Work Experience

One year of full-time public health or research experience post-baccalaureate

Prior Coursework

A general-level biology or biological science course, an upper-level mathematics course (calculus and statistics recommended), and a social science course

Standardized Test Scores

Standardized test scores (GRE, MCAT) are optional for this program. The admissions committee will make no assumptions if a standardized test score is omitted from an application, but will require evidence of quantitative/analytical ability through other application components such as academic transcripts and/or supplemental questions. Applications will be reviewed holistically based on all application components.
