We deeply appreciate your interest in the Johns ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ Graduate Summer Institute of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Our program has been in existence since 1983, and has trained thousands of students from both the U.S. and numerous other countries from all continents. The fact that many students return several times to our program attests to the excitement generated by our educational environment, and its varied and friendly atmosphere.

In this website, you will get information about the courses we teach as well as the logistical arrangements in connection with the program. As you will see, our courses cover a variety of themes. We offer courses on modern epidemiological and biostatistical methods, including those related to special applications, such as case-control studies, clinical trials, and health situation analysis. We also offer courses in substantive areas, such as infectious diseases and cancer, in the use of epidemiologic methods in evidence-based decision making, in risk sciences and public policy and in the management of epidemiologic studies.

An important feature of our Summer courses is that they are designed to provide the same depth and breadth as the courses given in our regular academic terms. All of our courses offer academic credits, and thus have to undergo a stringent review by the School’s Curriculum Committee. Students, therefore, have the option of taking our courses for either academic credits or as a continuing education activity. The program offers courses with varying durations, so as to accommodate both students who can take time off from their busy jobs for the whole length of our program (three weeks) as well as those who can only stay with us for a shorter time. We even offer intensive week-end courses for students who wish to be introduced to research design and analysis, but only have weekends free.

We understand that you have a choice among many Summer Institutes offered currently both in the U.S. and abroad, and would like to thank you for seriously considering selecting Hopkins as the site for taking your intensive Summer courses. The Departments of Epidemiology and Biostatistics have a long tradition of focusing on teaching, and many of their current faculty, several of whom teach in our Summer Program, have been the recipients of the Student Assembly’s Golden Apple for Excellence in Teaching. Our departments have made important contributions to the science and the practice of epidemiology and public health, with a tradition dating from the times of the historical figures such as W.H. Frost and William Cochran. We hope to be able to welcome you in person at the start of our Program. We promise to offer you an inspiring educational experience.
