The verdict holding former police officer Derek Chauvin accountable for the murder of George Floyd was an important and public step for accountability and justice.

Assuming continued improvements in vaccine availability and uptake over the summer and beyond, combined with improvements in public health measures and a reduced rate of community prevalence, we will return to something more similar to our pre-pandemic operations as described in today’s message from the University.

The publication’s latest rankings of schools of public health named our School #1—an honor we’ve enjoyed since the publication began the rankings in 1994. 

We are pleased to share the first public-facing school-wide Inclusion, Diversity, Anti-Racism, and Equity (IDARE) Action Plan for the Johns ��ѻ��ý. The Action Plan identifies strategies for creating an environment where we fuel our creativity and excellence by cultivating a more equitable, inclusive, anti-racist, and socially-just community.

If we all commit to these actions and advocate for change by supporting organizations dedicated to public health solutions to gun violence through better firearms laws, improving neighborhood conditions, dismantling structural racism, and investing in community prevention efforts, we can make a difference.

Regardless of the expressed motive of the shooter, this is a moment for us all to stand in strong opposition to anti-Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander (AAPI) bias acts and anti-AAPI harassment, gender-based violence, discrimination, and intimidation.

A longtime friend of public health and the founder of Meatless Mondays and other campaigns, Sid Lerner will be missed. But his marketing acumen and visionary generosity leaves a lasting imprint on the School.

Following the news that our University’s founder, Johns Hopkins, was a slaveholder, it is our solemn responsibility to not only acknowledge the legacies of racism and inequity but also dismantle structural racism and actively embrace anti-racism in all we do.

The School may be quiet these days because of the pandemic. But online, something exciting is happening. It’s called our Virtual Plus Campus.

A pathbreaking public health leader and “a force of nature,” Edyth Hull Schoenrich, MD, MPH ’71, passed away at age 101. She was a vital part of Johns Hopkins for more than 70 years and shaped the Bloomberg School in profound ways.
