Background

The Aetiology of Neonatal Infection in South Asia (ANISA) project in Sylhet district, Bangladesh, studied the bacterial and viral causes of and risk factors for newborn and young infant (0-59 days old) infections acquired in the community from 2012-2014.

Study Objectives

  • Design appropriate antibiotic treatment regimens and prevention strategies for infections in newborns and young infants

Key Facts

  • Preliminary analysis from this study shows that the majority of newborn infections are of viral origin
  • Before this study, more than 90% of suspected newborn infection cases remained unknown
