Background

During 2015 the Results for Development Institute and the Department of International Health at the Johns ��ѻ��ý hosted a series of “Conversations on sustainability” to discuss donor transitions in global health. Through discussion of a diverse set of transition cases, including GAVI transition planning, USAID family planning transition in Latin America, and transition of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Avahan initiative in India, among others, we explored best practice in managing programmatic transitions, challenges in developing transition policies and plans, and approaches for assessing readiness for transition. Given ongoing shifts in aid structure and policies, we anticipate that transition will continue to be central to future global health agendas. The proposed seminar is thus intended to be an opportunity for diverse stakeholders with specific transition experience, to engage in open and frank discussion about global health transitions and to identify key priorities for future analysis and action.

Objectives

In particular we aim to:

• Distill lessons learned from the prior Conversation series
• Highlight the most important themes in transition and the main issues behind them
• Identify the key gaps in our knowledge about transition and what might be done to address them through improvements in data, analysis, and decision processes that can strengthen policy and practice.

Participants

This meeting is targeted at a small group of invitees from development agencies, governments and academia who have experience in this field.
