In May, the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg Center in Washington, D.C., announced the latest recipients of its Nexus Awards—a $15 million initiative launched in 2023 to support research, teaching, and convening efforts. Now in its third round of funding, the program selected 38 projects addressing a wide array of global challenges, including primary care strengthening, AI-driven health care, and global food assistance.
Organized into three categories—Convening, Research, and Teaching—the Nexus Awards aim to strengthen interdisciplinary work and broaden public engagement at the Bloomberg Center.
Convening category recipients included three members of the Johns Hopkins International Injury Research Unit—Director Abdulgafoor Bachani, James Kumwenda, and Simon Obi—as well as Samuel Myers, Director of the Johns Hopkins Institute for Planetary Health. Their project, Safer Roads, Healthier Planet: Advancing Sustainable Mobility for Global Wellbeing, seeks to bring together experts across disciplines to address critical issues at the intersection of transportation, public health, and environmental sustainability.
Underscoring its impact, the project was one of four this year to receive additional support from the Johns Hopkins Institute for Planetary Health—an endorsement reserved for initiatives examining how disruptions to Earth’s natural systems affect human well-being.
