Training for Tomorrow

The future of tobacco control came together in Dublin as the 2025 cohort of Ascend: Leadership Development for the Future of Tobacco Control attended an in-person workshop and met with key figures.
The 40 young, enthusiastic participants from 18 low- and middle-income countries met for five days, working together to develop systems thinking and leadership skills designed to strengthen public health efforts globally. IGTC staff Steve Tamplin, Graziele Grilo, and Azadi Mathew-Lewis led the workshop with administrative support from Katie Bittinger. Director Joanna Cohen, associate director Kevin Welding and communications associate Jared Earley also took part. Speakers came from organizations including the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids (CTFK), the Pan American Health Organization, and Vital Strategies.
In addition to developing their leadership skills and building new relationships, Ascend participants took part in “Uniting Generations for Tobacco Control: A Dialogue Between Established and Emerging Tobacco Control Leaders,” an event co-sponsored by IGTC and CTFK. The event gave young tobacco control professionals a chance to connect with established leaders in the field.
Ascend participants also attended the World Conference on Tobacco Control—including several who presented posters and one who chaired a symposium.
Ascend will continue through December 2025 with virtual meetings, internships, and the mentorship program. Plans for the 2026 program are in progress.
