Experiences & Accomplishments
Anita Shet is a pediatric infectious diseases specialist whose work focuses on vaccine-preventable diseases and HIV medicine in children and adolescents. Her research spans clinical epidemiology, immunology, and the intersection of infection and nutrition, with an emphasis on vulnerable pediatric populations.
She has led multicenter studies on pneumococcal surveillance and pneumonia in children, including evaluating the impact of the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine rollout in India. Her work also examines the effects of missed opportunities and timely immunization on child health outcomes. As Director of the Johns Hopkins India Maternal and Child Health Center, she has implemented projects to strengthen antenatal care and primary child health services, and established training programs focused on public health capacity-building in India. In HIV medicine, she has concentrated on pediatric and adolescent care, conducting studies on adherence, nutritional supplementation, and behavioral interventions to improve long-term health outcomes.
Dr. Shet has served on the Council of the International Congress of Infectious Diseases, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practice Workgroup on Dengue Vaccines, the NIH Indo-US Vaccine Action Program Steering Group on trial preparedness, and as Co-Chair of the International Pediatric Association’s Committee on Children in Humanitarian and Crisis Settings.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, she co-led a World Health Organization coalition investigating global disruptions to routine childhood immunizations. She also directed a global advocacy initiative on childhood pneumonia prevention in Africa and continues to develop youth-focused health literacy interventions and support programs for orphans and vulnerable children.
