Title: DNA Mixture Interpretation: Past, Present, and Future Needs Through the Lens of a NIST Scientific Foundation Review
Abstract: The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is conducting scientific foundation reviews that explore the capabilities and limitations of forensic science methods and practices [1]. One of these NIST foundation studies involves DNA mixture interpretation methods, including probabilistic genotyping software systems [2]. This study describes scientific principles and historical perspectives including input collected from a group of forensic DNA practitioners and researchers and explores the peer-reviewed literature and other publicly accessible sources. The final version of the NIST DNA mixture interpretation report was also informed by public comments received in response to an initial draft released in June 2021. The contents of this report, which is arranged into six chapters and two supplemental documents, will be discussed along with its key takeaways.
Speakers
is a NIST Fellow & Special Assistant to the Director for Forensic Science. He is an internationally recognized expert in forensic DNA analysis and holds a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from the University of Virginia.
