Introduces students to the principles of public health informatics, research design, and methods. Includes topics such as: identifying public health informatics research domains, designing informatics research, selecting appropriate informatics methods, integrating data science in informatics research, and conducting literature reviews for public health informatics research. Covers specialized topics in public health informatics research and conducting informatics research projects while explaining the informatics challenges in the analytic process. Introduces students to scientific dissemination methods and career development in health informatics research.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
- Explain the design and framing of research in public health informatics
- Define and compare different types of research in public health informatics
- Describe the common data analytic processes used in public health informatics research
- Formulate public health informatics research questions, select an appropriate research design, and address potential ethical and privacy issues associated with the proposed solution
- Develop and assess an analytic plan to analyze healthcare data
- Perform various data quality checks and amend potential data quality challenges
- Present public health informatics research findings to others
- Identify the steps involved in publishing a public health informatics scientific paper
