Do you plan to be a leader in healthcare practice, education, policy, or administration? Whether in Indigenous or mainstream health systems, learn culturally grounded and values-based frameworks for leadership that are practical and applicable to current, and relevant leadership issues.
Introduces students to historic and evolving relationships among diversity, culture, and leadership through an Indigenous lens. Explores real cases and solutions. Provides students with lectures, media, and readings from Indigenous leaders working in the field with access to experts in healthcare administration, health policy, and other spaces. Interacts with literature, tools, and frameworks that provide practical skills and knowledge for ethical leadership in Indigenous and mainstream arenas.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
- Identify key criteria for effective leadership within public health organizations that serve Indigenous communities
- Utilize case studies, identify key elements of Indigenous leadership models and wise practices that are culturally informed and highlight effective leadership
- Apply principles of Indigenous bioethics and research ethics to design and implement culturally safe and sensitive public health research.
- Present frameworks for leadership-based on organizational philosophy, theory and practices
