Scientific Grant Writing - Build a Compelling Grant Proposal
This course will be offered synchronously, via Zoom, on the following dates and times: June 3, 2021 (9a-12:30p); June 7, 10, 14, 17, 21, 25, 2021 (9a-11a). Students are required to complete readings prior to the start of the course.
Must be masters level or higher to enroll
Covers strategies for constructing a compelling scientific grant application, common errors in grantsmanship and how to avoid them, grant application review criteria, ethics related to grant writing and reviewing, and identification of funding sources. Prepares a short NIH-style proposal and receives feedback from in-class discussions and written critiques from others. Includes proposal topics that are selected by the student and developed with guidance from the instructor and others. Prepares critiques of classmates’ anonymous proposals for discussion in class and reviewed in an NIH-style study section.
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
Identify essential components of hypothesis-driven research plans
Construct a proposal intended to convince reviewers
Gain grantsmanship skills by identifying the strengths and weaknesses of other proposals
Experience the strengths and caveats of a peer-review system
Prepares a short 6-page NIH-style proposal and a revision of this same proposal following review
Prepares critiques of classmates' anonymous, instructor-edited proposals for discussion in class
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:

This is the virtual/online section of a course also held onsite. You are responsible for the modality in which you register. Recommended for, but not restricted to PhD students in laboratory sciences.
